Artifice is a nonprofit literary magazine, published twice annually, that aims, by content and context, to showcase creative work aware of its own artifice. The things we like, we like more than we can stand.

What We Want

Artifice is looking for previously-unpublished stories, prose works, and poems, pieces that are (as the name implies) aware of their own artifice.

Artifice believes, for reasons that we do not want to go into here, that 1 to 14 pages is about the right length for a short story. Artifice is unlikely to accept stories or prose works over 16 pages (unless something strange and fascinating is happening on every single one of those pages). Artifice is, however, slightly more likely than most publications to accept your long poem (though over 8 pages is pushing it). Generally, we like to keep things quick and eclectic. However, we reserve the right to publish anything of any length so long as it fits our aesthetic.

If you're sending us something that fits one of the items on our wishlist, let us know in your email. Submissions aren't limited to the wishlist, of course, but we like to think that it gives a pretty good idea of the sorts of things we're after.

If you’re planning on sending us something over thirty pages, query first.

Payment is two copies of the issue in which your work appears.

We'd love to have you as a reader, as well: subscriptions are just $10/year + s&h

How to Submit

Please note that we have switched to email submissions. We are no longer accepting submissions through our old Submissions Manager. If you submitted work before we switched to email submissions, don't worry - we still have your piece, and are in the process of reviewing it.

1. Submissions should be sent to submissions AT artificemag DOT com. The subject line of your email should contain your name and the name of the piece or pieces you are submitting.

2. Please include a cover letter as the body of your email. Your cover letter should include your name, address, and email address, as well as the title of the piece(s) you are submitting, a short bio, previous publications, etc.

3. Attach your submission as a single file containing 3-5 poems or flash pieces, or one short story or other prose work. Files must be .doc, .rtf, or .pdf only; other file formats will be deleted unread. We cannot accept .docx files at this time.

4. Only one submission at a time, please. If you have not yet heard back from us about a previous submission, please do not send us another.

5. Simultaneous submissions are OK - make sure you send us an email (to editors AT artificemag DOT com) letting us know ASAP if something is accepted elsewhere.
